Over 1000 candidates till 4th phase have criminal background

A whopping 1,042 candidates out of a total of over 6,700 nominees contesting in the first four phases of  Lok Sabha elections have criminal background, a study claimed.

Out of a total 6,735 candidates, the report prepared by Association of Democratic Reforms and National Election

Watch, claimed 1,042 have criminal cases against them. This accounts for 15.47% of the total candidates.

Congress tops the list of such ‘dubious’ candidates with 108 nominees and closely followed by BJP (106) and BSP (100). The Samajwadi Party has 47 such candidates, it said.

According to the study, of a total of 463 candidates charged with heinous crime, BJP and BSP have 40 such contestants each followed by Congress at a close 39.

There are 175 “red-alert” constituencies in the country having three or more candidates with criminal records, it said adding that Bihar has 33 such seats followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh (27 each).

On the financial worth of the candidates, the analysis showed there were 1,090 “crorepatis” belonging to the four main political parties of Congress, BJP, BSP and SP.

The ruling Congress leads the crorepati list with 244 followed by BJP (165), BSP (134) and SP (57).

On the educational front, about 43.9% of the total candidates are graduates or above.
